How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign is a high-tech procedure that utilizes computer technology to identify the perfect positioning of your smile. Our orthodontists in Northern Virginia will take photographs and impressions of your smile and upload them into a computer program. A 3-D image of your smile will then be available for our team to plan your treatment process.

Via this computer program, you are able to view the state of your smile before the treatment as well as how your teeth will be correctly aligned during the procedure and what your final smile should look like – all before you even start the program.

When all parties are satisfied with the treatment plan, a series of plastic aligner trays are custom-made especially for your smile.

When do I wear the aligners?

The Invisalign treatment plan is designed for quick results; however, it is vital that you follow our recommendations to meet the agreed-upon timeline. The plastic aligners should be worn at all times, removed only to eat, drink, brush and floss.

In most cases you will wear one aligner for approximately two weeks and then switch to the next set in your treatment plan. Occasional trips to the cosmetic dentist’s office will ensure that the teeth are aligning properly and in the right timeframe.

How long will it take to see final results with Invisalign?

Every patient is unique; therefore, there is not one definitive answer to this question. The length of time depends on the number of aligners that are needed to produce the desired results. Most patients require between 20 and 30 aligner trays for each set of teeth (upper and lower). Because each tray is worn for two weeks, patients can expect for Invisalign to take approximately one year to see final results.
