Sleep Apnea Risk Factors
Northern Virginia, including Arlington, Tysons Corner, Alexandria, Fairfax, and McLean, Virginia Dentist
Those of you in the McLean area who are suffering with snoring or are even struggling for breath while sleeping may be dealing with a condition called sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can be the reason for someone taking shallow breaths while sleeping and can even include periods of time where a person goes without breathing for a brief time. Sleep apnea can affect both adults and children and often represents a serious condition that may need treatment by the experienced dentists at Galleria Dental Aesthetics.
Sleep apnea can be classified as obstructive sleep apnea or central sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs because your airway may be blocked by an abnormality that you were born with like excessive tissue in the back of the tongue, throat, or nose.
Central sleep apnea can occur when your brain doesn’t send the proper signals to the muscles responsible for breathing. Sleep apnea can also be caused by a combination of both of these conditions. Either type of sleep apnea can cause regular snoring and lack of sleep which can have several negative effects or your ability to function properly during the day.

SLEEP APNEA RISK FACTORS
Obstructive sleep apnea can be caused by the following:
- Being overweight
- Having too small of an airway
- Use of sedatives, tranquilizers, or alcohol
- Nasal congestion
If the fat content in your body is too high, this can cause fat deposits in the airway that may obstruct breathing. You may also have been born with a thick neck circumference which can cause a narrowing in the throat, or may simply have been born with a narrow airway. Men are twice as likely to suffer from sleep apnea as women, however, women’s risk increases after menopause.
Sleep apnea also affects significantly more people after the age of 60. Smoking may increase the inflammation around the airway which can cause sleep apnea, and the use of alcohol, tranquilizers, or sedatives can relax the muscles in your throat, thereby causing breathing problems.
Central sleep apnea can be caused by the following:
- Gender, as men are twice as likely to suffer from sleep apnea
- Being older than 65
- Having a heart condition
- Having suffered from a stroke or brain tumor
