How to Care for Your Smile If You’re Pregnant
- Posted on: Sep 15 2019
Pregnancy can be a wonderful time for many expecting mothers. The months are filled with wonder and amazement until the child is born. However, during pregnancy, many mothers don’t think about how their oral health can affect their baby—or how their baby can affect their oral health. Drs. Chong Lee, Joseph Oh, Kirsten Lee, and Judy Kwon of Galleria Dental Aesthetics in McLean, VA encourage women to speak to our professionals about their oral health as soon as they have found out they are expecting.
How pregnancy affects oral health
- The hormones in the body make it easier for the gums to be irritated by plaque, which can contribute to the development of pregnancy gingivitis. The symptoms include red, swollen, and tender gums which may bleed. Approximately half of women who are pregnancy develop gingivitis and should visit their dentist for assistance in controlling the condition.
- The Mayo Clinic reports that hormones such as estrogen and progesterone can loosen the bones and ligaments that keep the teeth in place, regardless of the presence of gum disease. It may feel as though the teeth are loose. If this feeling does not go away after the birth of your child, talk to your dentist about these concerns.
- Women who experience morning sickness may be at a higher risk of developing cavities. This is because stomach acids can cause damage to natural tooth enamel. If you are experiencing morning sickness, be sure to brush your teeth after vomiting to eliminate these acids from affecting the teeth.
- Always notify your dentist about your pregnancy. Certain procedures and diagnostics should be avoided while pregnant. However, dental x-rays are often safe as long as the rest of the body is properly covered with a protective apron.
