Can Invisalign® be Used to Treat TMJ?
- Posted on: Feb 20 2012
Invisalign® may be useful in treating your TMJ, depending on the cause of your symptoms. If your TMJ is caused by an unbalanced, misaligned bite, an orthodontic approach like Invisalign® may be the right treatment for you. If your symptoms are caused by grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw, Invisalign® aligners may worsen these habits. In other cases, the aligners have no influence on these habits.
In some cases, other treatments for TMJ may be necessary before you can begin Invisalign®. Other TMJ treatments include:
- A dental orthotic device
- Jaw massages and exercises
- Restoration of decayed or broken teeth
In the most extreme and rare cases, jaw surgery may be required to repair the TMJ.
The only way to find out if it is appropriate for you to use Invisalign® to resolve your discomfort or concerns, is to schedule a consultation and examination with our experienced neuromuscular dentists who will determine whether an orthodontic approach is the best way to alleviate your TMJ symptoms.
