What causes Sensitive Teeth?

If you have sensitive teeth, you should visit our dentists for an evaluation. We can find the cause of the sensitivity and determine the most effective treatment for alleviating it. Some of the possible causes include:

  • Gum recession
  • Cracked tooth
  • Eroded tooth enamel
  • Infected tooth pulp

Brushing too aggressively with your toothbrush can cause gum recession and can erode the enamel. You may want to adjust your toothbrush pressure to prevent tooth sensitivity. Only gentle, light pressure is required when you brush your teeth.

If you crack a tooth, the crack can expose the sensitive pulp inside your tooth. The pieces of the tooth can irritate this pulp, or the pulp may become infected, both of which can lead to sensitivity.

A small dental cavity is unlikely to cause tooth sensitivity, but if the decay has reached your tooth root, the nerves inside your tooth root can cause sensitivity when exposed to air, food and other irritants.

The only way to know for sure what is causing these sensations in your teeth is to be examined by an experienced dentist.
