- Traditional braces. Traditional braces are the more common varieties seen for children and teenagers. Metal brackets are glued to the teeth on the front or on the back (for lingual braces). Then, they are attached using a guide wire that threads through the brackets. These wires are adjusted regularly at the dentist’s office to help in moving the teeth into a more pleasant and functional alignment. Traditional braces can address mild, moderate, or even severe malocclusion, and allows patients the chance to get the smile they’ve always wanted with a more traditional means of treatment.
- Invisalign. Another option that many of our adult patients consider is that of Invisalign orthodontics. Invisalign uses clear plastic aligner trays that are fabricated specifically for the patient. Patients visit the dental office to have digital impressions made of their current smile. The dentist translates this into Invisalign software to show the final results of treatment so patients can visualize the new appearance. the dentist sends this information to the Invisalign laboratories where a series of plastic trays are made. The patients arrive back at the dental office to pick up their trays and learn about how to use them. When patients wear the trays for at least 20 hours a day and two weeks for each tray, they can achieve the smile they’ve always wanted. The primary benefit of Invisalign is that patients are wearing a practically invisible device that does not cover their smile with metal brackets and wires. It is important for patients to note that those with mild to moderate misalignment may be candidates for treatment, while others with more severe malocclusion might still be better suited for traditional braces.
