How Long do Teeth Whitening Effects Last?

The professional teeth whitening treatments offered by our Fairfax cosmetic dentists can whiten your teeth several shades in a short period of time. But after your teeth have been whitened, how long can you expect results to last?

This will, of course, vary from person to person, but on average a single teeth whitening treatment can produce results for upwards of six months. To help prolong your results, we offer take-home whitening kits that can be used for touch-ups as necessary, though you may require an in-office treatment again within a year.

Prolonging Results

You can prolong your teeth whitening results by taking steps at home to minimize staining. These include:

  • Decreasing your intake of coffee, tea, and red wine
  • Avoiding sports drinks and sodas
  • Minimizing your intake of sugary snacks
  • Brushing with a mildly abrasive toothpaste
  • Visiting our office every six months for professional cleanings

During your regularly scheduled visits we can remove surface stains and polish your teeth. We can also discuss with you additional whitening options during these appointments.

If you desire longer lasting results, we may recommend an option such as porcelain veneers. During your initial consultation we will discuss all of your options to help you determine which one will best meet your needs.
