Porcelain Veneers vs. Composite Resin Bonding for Tooth Repair

At Galleria Dental Aesthetics, men and women in the area of McLean, VA have a wide range of solutions available to them for restoring the smile. Imperfections on the teeth at the front of the smile can be the most concerning for patients worried about their aesthetics. These teeth, called the anterior teeth, are visible when patients smile, laugh, and speak with others. If they are chipped or broken, it may impact one’s self-confidence. However, restorations such as porcelain veneers and composite resin may be used to disguise these imperfections and make the smile look beautiful once again!

Porcelain veneers vs. composite resin bonding

These two options are highly recommended by the team of Galleria Dental Aesthetics. Both provide coverage for imperfections and have a natural look, but this is where their similarities end.

  • Porcelain veneers – porcelain veneers are essentially facings that are made to cover the entire visible tooth on the front of the smile. These are very thin and fabricated with ceramic. The veneer is custom-made for a patient to match the shape, size, and color of the teeth. Porcelain veneers require removal of a thin portion of enamel before the dentist takes an impression. This impression is mailed to a laboratory for the fabrication of the porcelain veneer, which is bonded in place approximately one week after the process began.
  • Composite resin bonding – composite resin bonding is a material that can be molded onto the tooth and shaped in place. Using a curing light, the dentist will harden the material and then polish it to look just like natural tooth enamel. This restoration costs less than porcelain veneers and can be done in a single day. However, it is more susceptible to staining and may need to be replaced more often than a porcelain veneer.
