Probiotics have long been known to aid in digestion and help keep the GI tract healthy. Some probiotics, particularly lactobacillus reuteri, have also been shown to help prevent cavities by neutralizing damaging bacteria in the mouth. It is no surprise then, that a recent study found lactobacillus reuteri to improve the efficacy of periodontal treatment by 53 percent.
As with all probiotics, lactobacillus reuteri can be found in a number of cultured and fermented foods. This particular strain of beneficial bacterium can also be found in supplement form. Neither method is more effective, but supplements are often better for people who suffer from lactose intolerance as dairy products remain the most readily available food source of probiotics.
Can adding a probiotic to your diet improve your general oral health? Most likely not on its own. However, combined with a thorough oral hygiene routine, certain strains may help reduce risks of tooth decay and strengthen the body’s natural defense against bacterial infection of the gums. During your next visit with one of our McLean family dentists we would be happy to discuss ways you can supplement your oral hygiene routine in greater detail.
