National Gum Disease Awareness Month: 5 Must-Know Prevention Tips

Dentist,,Floss,And,Mouth,Of,Man,With,Smile,On,Gray Gum disease is one of the most widespread oral health issues, yet it often goes overlooked. Since February is National Gum Disease Awareness Month, now is the perfect time to learn more about gum disease prevention to help keep your smile healthy.

Brush And Floss Properly

One of the most important things you can do to prevent gum disease is to brush and floss properly every day. Be sure to brush gently for two minutes at least twice per day to thoroughly remove plaque, food particles, and bacteria.

Pay special attention to the gumline and areas between teeth. Floss at least once per day to remove plaque and debris that your toothbrush can’t reach.

Get Regular Dental Cleanings

Even if you have good at-home oral hygiene habits, you still need professional cleanings to keep gum disease at bay. The dental experts recommend visiting your dentist for a cleaning and checkup twice a year. At your appointments, your dentist can remove built-up tartar above and below your gumline and spot early signs of problems.

Don’t Smoke Or Use Tobacco Products

Smoking or using other tobacco products vastly increases your risk for gum disease. Tobacco use can disguise gum disease symptoms, while the chemicals in tobacco products increase inflammation and damage tissues in your mouth. Quitting smoking and tobacco is one of the kindest things you can do for the health of your gums.

Eat a Balanced Diet

A nutritious, balanced diet gives your gums the vitamins and nutrients they need to stay healthy. Diets low in essential vitamins and minerals may make your gums susceptible to infection and disease. Getting plenty of vitamins C and D, calcium, and phosphorus supports gum health.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

In addition to professional cleanings every six months, also make sure to schedule regular oral exams with your dentist. These appointments allow your dentist to carefully inspect your entire mouth for signs of gum disease or other oral health issues. Catching problems early is key to preventing future problems.
