Tips for Getting Used to Your Invisalign® Aligners

Woman smiling and holding up her Invisalign tray in McLean, VA Starting Invisalign® is an exciting step toward a straighter, more confident smile. But like any orthodontic treatment, there’s an adjustment period. If you’re feeling a little discomfort or unsure how to adapt to life with clear aligners, don’t worry! Here are some helpful tips to make the transition smooth and successful.

At Galleria Dental Aesthetics in Northern Virginia, patients benefit from personalized attention, advanced technology, and a commitment to total comfort throughout their treatment. With award-winning cosmetic dentists Dr. Lee and Dr. Oh at the helm, the practice offers exceptional care and proven results that keep patients returning for their aesthetic and orthodontic needs.

Wear Them as Directed

You must wear your Invisalign aligners for 20-22 hours daily to get the most out of them. It might be tempting to take them out, especially in the beginning, but consistent wear ensures quicker adjustment and optimal results.

Expect Mild Discomfort Initially

Feeling pressure or tenderness during the first few days is normal. This is a sign your aligners are working! Over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods can help ease any temporary soreness.

Practice Speaking

Some people experience a slight lisp at first. Don’t be discouraged, as your tongue needs time to adapt. Reading aloud or having conversations at home can help you adjust faster.

Keep a Case Handy

Always carry your Invisalign case to store your aligners when you eat or drink. Wrapping them in a napkin or leaving them out increases the chances of loss or damage.

Stay on Top of Oral Hygiene

Remove your aligners before you eat, and try to brush and floss before putting them back in. Clean your trays daily with a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water (never hot!). Good hygiene prevents staining and keeps your breath fresh.

Switch Trays Before Bed

When it’s time to switch to a new set of aligners, consider doing it before you sleep. That way, you’ll sleep through the initial tightness and wake up partly adjusted.
