A new study conducted by the American Society of Nephrology has found that African Americans who suffer from periodontal disease experienced kidney disease at four-times the rate of those who do not. The study included 699 African American adults and took place over a five year period.
Gun disease has long been linked to systemic health issues including heart disease, hypertension, respiratory illness, and complications with pregnancy and diabetes. The bacteria that causes gum disease has also been found to be more prevalent in people with dementia and Alzheimer’s, suggesting there is a link there as well. This is the first study to find a link between this common oral health issue and chronic kidney disease.
