WHAT IS INVISALIGN® (CLEAR BRACES)?
Straight and well-aligned teeth are important for both your aesthetic objectives and quality of life. However, while we often think of younger patients when we talk about bite alignment and braces, many men and women in Northern Virginia are in need of correction. Fortunately, Invisalign® is an effective, inconspicuous option for treating your bite alignment problems. The most common orthodontic problems are:
- Crowded teeth
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR INVISALIGN®?
If you are a resident of Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax or any of the other communities in Northern Virginia, you can have the teeth of your dreams. If you have any Invisalign® questions, Dr. Chong Lee and our dentists will be more than happy to answer them at your initial consultation. Many patients want dental corrections but without unsightly and painful metal braces. You may be a good candidate for Invisalign® if:
- You have healthy teeth and gums.
- Your mouth has stopped growing.
- You are committed to wearing Invisalign® at least 22 hours a day.
Additionally, if you smoke, you may want to consider whether Invisalign® is right for you. Smoking tends to stain the aligners and make them more noticeable. However, you must not take the aligners out to smoke. You will not be wearing the aligners often enough if you take them out when you smoke.
HOW DOES INVISALIGN WORK?
Invisalign is a high-tech procedure that uses computer technology to identify the perfect positioning of your smile. Our orthodontists in Alexandria will take photographs and impressions of your smile and then upload them into a computer program. A 3-D image of your smile will be available to our team to evaluate your bite and jaw alignment. Allowing us to plan your treatment process. A set of Invisalign® aligners custom will be made for your specific needs.
Once you become comfortable with placing your aligners, the rest of your correction process is simple. You will wear your aligners for approximately two weeks, and then come in for a new set that will fit your slightly new alignment. Most patients wear Invisalign® aligners for approximately a year, though every patient is unique.
INVISALIGN VS BRACES
When compared to metal braces, Invisalign® has several advantages. During the process of wearing your Invisalign® aligners, you will enjoy the fact that:
- They offer superior comfort with no wires or metal points
- You can remove your aligners before eating and you can eat whatever you like
- Teeth cleaning becomes substantially easier
- They are less noticeable than braces
- There are no appointments to undergo uncomfortable tightening

The Invisalign treatment plan is designed for quick results; however, it is vital that you follow our recommendations to meet the agreed-upon timeline. The plastic aligners should be worn at all times, removed only to eat, drink, brush and floss.
In most cases you will wear one aligner for approximately two weeks and then switch to the next set in your treatment plan. Occasional trips to the cosmetic dentist’s office will ensure that the teeth are aligning properly and in the right timeframe.
IS INVISALIGN® NOTICEABLE?
Invisalign® clear braces are made out of a clear medical grade plastic that is nearly invisible. When you have your aligners in, they will be difficult, but not impossible for people to see. Still, Invisalign® aligners are much less conspicuous than traditional metal braces.
In addition, Invisalign® aligners are removable and can be taken out for situations where you don’t want anyone to see them.
HOW LONG DOES INVISALIGN® TREATMENT TAKE?
Every patient is unique; therefore, there is not one definitive answer to this question. The length of time depends on the number of aligners that are needed to produce the desired results. Most patients require between 20 and 30 aligner trays for each set of teeth (upper and lower). Since each tray is worn for two weeks, patients can expect for Invisalign to take approximately one year to see final results.
IS THE INVISALIGN RETAINER PAINFUL?
To straighten your smile, the Invisalign® system must gradually move your teeth. When your teeth move, some mild discomfort can be expected. Since Invisalign® moves your teeth gently over the course of several months; this pain should not be intense and should subside within the first few days of every aligner change. Our Virginia Invisalign® dentists will work with you to help ensure maximum comfort and safety during your Invisalign® treatment.
