Does TMJ cause Jaw Clicking?

Jaw clicking or popping sounds are one possible symptom of temporomandibular joint disorder – TMJ. These sounds occur when you’re chewing, or opening and closing your mouth. Clicking or popping can be caused by problems with the alignment and normal function of the hinged temporomandibular joint. Sometimes these sounds go away after a few hours, but for other people they are persistent.

You may experience jaw sounds along with other TMJ symptoms, such as:

  • Jaw pain
  • Chronic headaches
  • Face, neck and shoulder pain
  • Facial swelling
  • Tooth pain
  • Ringing in your ears

Some combination of these symptoms is usually experienced by people with TMJ. But the only way to know if you have TMJ is to be evaluated by an experienced neuromuscular dentist. Your symptoms could be caused by some other dental issue, and it’s important to contact our dentists to find out the exact source.
