Today, dental restoration integrates a variety of materials and technology to repair a patient’s natural tooth structure. Problems such as cavities, periodontal disease, and infection can cause damage to the teeth, gums, and even the jawbone. With the care and attention of a quality dental provider such as Dr. Chong Lee in McLean, VA, patients can restore their natural tooth structure and maintain the function and appearance of their smile.
What materials are used to restore natural tooth structure?
Many of the patients who come to our practice and are in need of tooth repair will often ask what materials are used to restore the tooth and ensure it looks natural. Two of the most common restorative materials include:
- Composite resin bonding. Composite resin bonding is a popular material used to help in restoring teeth. It is most commonly used in dental fillings to fill cavities that develop. This is because it can be matched to the patient’s natural tooth color to ensure it blends in. Other materials used in the past, such as silver amalgam, were dark gray in color and made it apparent that dental work was done.
- Porcelain. Porcelain and ceramic are typical in cosmetic dentistry. When this material is created to match the patient’s teeth color and shape, and is filed and polished, it looks just like natural tooth enamel. Restorations that cover a large portion of a tooth, such as dental crowns, inlays, and onlays are often made with porcelain. Not only is this material safe and aesthetic, it is also extremely strong and durable.
Can I choose?
There are times when patients can choose which material they would prefer for restoring natural tooth structure. For example, patients with a gap in-between the front teeth can choose to have the issue disguised with composite resin bonding or concealed with the placement of two porcelain veneers. Both are viable options.
